Chewing gum is against the law in Singapore. If gum is outlawed here, will only outlaws chew gum?

As a Wriggly's Spearmint fan I like the outlaw image. I want to be looked at as being an outlaw gum slinger. ' Just step aside pardner and let me spit this wad of gum out on the sidewalk.' That's right. I am doublemint bad to the bone.

You are right to an extent, however the National Gum Association is introducing legislation allowing "concealed chew permits" on a trial basis in some of Singapore's more conservative districts.

I understand that each pack of gum must be registered and the person has to qualify after passing a written test on safe gum use and they have to have a secure storage facility in their home.

Breaking any of the above restrictions and you may be punished by up to 5 whacks with the cane of discipline.

Apparently gum restrictions were eased in East Germany just before the wall came down in 1989 and it had a bubble effect on the economy there.

Chewing gum left on floors, stairways and pavements in public areas increased the cost of cleaning and damaged cleaning equipment. Gum stuck on the seats of public buses was also considered a problem. It was reported that vandals were sticking chewing gum on the door sensors of MRT trains, preventing the door from functioning properly and causing disruption of train services. Such incidents were rare but costly and culprits were difficult to apprehend."

So I can kinda see why it was banned but I don't think that it will ever be banned here. Too many "rebels" like you like to chew.
